Ureteric kinking, also known as ureteral kinking, refers to an abnormal bending or twisting of the ureter, which can lead to urinary obstruction, hydronephrosis, and flank pain. It may be congenital or acquired due to surgical procedures, trauma, or anatomical variations. Causes & Risk Factors Congenital anomalies (abnormal ureteral development). Post-surgical complications (e.g., after pelvic or kidney surgery). Retroperitoneal fibrosis (scar tissue compressing the ureter). Pelvic organ prolapse (pressure from surrounding structures). Kidney stones (causing secondary kinking due to obstruction). Symptoms Flank pain (due to urine buildup). Hydronephrosis (swelling of the kidney). Urinary retention or difficulty urinating. Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs). Diagnosis & Imaging Ultrasound (detects hydronephrosis). CT urography (visualizes ureteral anatomy and kinking severity). Retrograde pyelography (detailed ureter imaging). MRI or IVP (intravenous pyelogram) for structural assessment. Treatment & Management Observation (for mild cases without obstruction). Ureteral stenting (to relieve obstruction). Surgical correction (e.g., ureteral reimplantation or reconstruction). Hydration therapy (to prevent stone formation and obstruction). #Ureter
