Taking advantage of the nice winter temperatures to check on bees and put on sugar boards. Opening hives in cold weather can be challenging. I've selected a sunny day, warm (51°F) with no wind. I only open the top cover. It's important not to break the cluster of bees. Clustering is how bees generate heat. During winter bees keep the internal hive temperature between 90-95°F. When internal hive temperature falls below 81°F eggs and larva die. Chilled brood can occur. This is my first time using sugar boards. I decided on David Burns sugar boards. I am very happy with the sugar boards. These boards are reusable and come with the sugar recipe. I will be using them again next year. I will be putting them on earlier so that I can put them on without the inner hive cover. Thank you for watching, I hope you found the information helpful.
