Recorded by Mel James, in the "Upstairs at Larry's" club in the pub. The images of Bert are not from this gig, but all from the same year: 1992, stills from Jan Leman's Acoustic Routes film. The images at the end are drawn from the internet: the homeless people from various places around the world, and the houses mostly from Edinburgh and Hampstead - both places Bert knew well, and could even have been the places he was thinking of. Judging from Bert's unnecessarily apologetic intro (he makes no mistakes!), this could be the first ever public performance of this song, which he can be seen demonstrating to John Renbourn in Leman's film. You could regard the song as his own "Streets of London", echoing his friend Ralph McTell's hit of 15 years earlier. Mel says that Bert was playing a Fender guitar at the gig, not his customary Yamaha. By the time he recorded the song for Toy Balloon in 1998, the guitar part had been thoroughly re-arranged.
