In the mountain environment our route, both the up and down, often, offers a variety of unique challenges we must be ready for. One of those challenges being, how to manage easier and oftentimes loose sections of the route. In our experience it’s common to see climbing parties implementing standard fifth class climbing techniques in and easier 3rd/4th class environment. With a little bit of a mental exercise, it is easy to understand that in easier terrain , our rope, if being utilized in the way we explain above, drags on the ground. Remember, this is easier climbing which is generally not steep. So why does this matter? For one, rope dragging on the ground is not ideal for its own integrity, it also can create a rock fall hazard. If the terrain is loose, a rope can displace rocks as the leader moves onward which sends debris down to the belayer and others below. A real world example: two of our guides were climbing Bugaboo Spire in Canada ( beautiful 😻). They chose to solo the first 500’ of the route to the saddle because there were a lot of parties doing the exact techniques we mention above. They wanted out in the easier terrain. Speed counts. In hindsight maybe they should have climbed it another day… however the story goes on. A party above them dislodged a refrigerator sized hunk of granite due to rope drag and that block cascaded down the first section of the climb. Hitting the wall, then exploding at each contact point. Nearly missing one of our guides and several other climbers, as it hit the glacier below. A true near death experience. Now, a lot could have changed to stack the risk in the climbing party’s favor, one of which was shorting the rope. Here are some reasons why shorting the rope could help: ✅Less rope out to manage ✅Easier visual and auditory communication So why the WOW? The WOW coil is an option you can employ, alongside that of the traditional kiwi coil in some situations. Breakdown of the rope is easier and faster— the right technique at the right time 💯 When you are going from short pitch mode to fifth class climbing and also from that mode to rappelling, dropping all coils at once offers more speed to the day.
