Dor to Dor

Dor (\'dor\) is one of the three untranslatable words in the Romanian language describing a deep emotional state of nostalgic longing for someone or something unattainable. It's related to the feelings of longing, yearning, it comprises nostalgia, pain, yet a bittersweet feeling of satisfaction over having this feeling. It's a feeling one holds on to, it's a personal treasure arising from a personal loss. The expression "mi-e dor de.." often translated as "I long for..", implies a mix of missing, happy memories and the pain for their loss. It's the only expression used when talking about family, friends or lovers. Project concept:  The video represents a video collage of unscripted authentic video Skype conversations with family and friends mostly from Moldova illustrating how our relationships evolve together with technology and how they adapt to the growing geographical distances between people and the lack of the sensory components such as touch, hugging, kissing using creative ways to enhance their video call experience. The video explores the paradox of this medium. Just like the feeling of "dor", it is somewhat painful to experience, because it constantly feeds the desire to cross over into the screen and be with the people you love, it feeds the regret of not being where they are, yet it is the best way available at the moment to participate somehow in their lives and be close to them.
