Amid Iran War, Modi Govt Invokes Essential Commodities Act To Regulate LPG, LNG Supply

The government has invoked the Essential Commodities Act to ensure uninterrupted domestic LPG supply, directing refineries and petrochemical units to maximize production of liquefied petroleum gas. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas’ late-evening order requires refiners to channel all C3 and C4 hydrocarbon streams—including propane, butane, propylene, and butenes—towards LPG production. These streams must be supplied exclusively to state-run oil marketing companies—Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum—which handle nearly all domestic LPG distribution. Refineries and petrochemical units are barred from diverting these streams for other uses, prioritizing household LPG. The ministry emphasized LPG’s essential role in Indian households, noting that uninterrupted availability serves public interest.
