Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video describes the Fracture Types of the Occipital Condyles Fracture of the occipital condyle is a rare injury. Fracture of the occipital conduyle is important becasues it may be associated with the occipitocervical dissociation (instability). Fractures are usually missed on routine x-rays and are best diagnosed by CT scan. There are three types of fractures (Anderson and Montesano Classification) Type I: Injuries are impact fractures which occur due to axial loading. This type is usually a stable injury. They are comminuted and is usually a stable injury treated with cervical orthosis. Type II: Fracture extends up into the skull. Fractures are treated by orthosis. Type III: injuries are avulsion Fractures of the alar ligament attachment. Occur due to contralateral bending and rotation. Usually unstable injuries. Be considered about occipitocervical dissociation in this type of fracture. Injuries may require occipitocervical fusion.
