I have always been a big science fiction fan and one of my favorite programs when I was growing up was Lost In Space. The show was created and produced by Irwin Allan. (1965-1968) The same imaginative man that brought us Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and so many more enjoyable programs. The first season of Lost in Space was excellent for the time. I was always mesmerized and intrigued by their space ship the Jupiter 2. How I wanted to be one of those traveling from planet to planet. The show ran three seasons with varying plot lines and towards the end of its run the stories got pretty bad. Some of the episodes like The Anti Matter Man were extremely well written while you had other episodes like The Great Vegetable Rebellion that were just plain terrible. In January 1965 the 20th Century Fox crew was tasked to shoot the Jupiter 2 (Gemini 12) location scenes that were to appear in the series from time to time. One of the locations was Red Rock Canyon just outside of Mohave and the other was the Trona Pinnacles. Both incredible geologic marvels locations and perfect areas for the out of this world look. The Fox crew used a 4 foot model and set up a two wire rigging to create these tremendous shots. Now a days computers are used for most of these kind of shots. One other interesting bit of information was the music sound track for the series was produced by the one and only John Williams. Background music and title. Here's a short video I put together at the exact location these iconic scenes were created. Enjoy!
