Conference interpreting allows communication between the speaker and a group of audience members. Conference interpreters are tasked with listening to the context of what the speaker is saying, and relaying it back accurately in the target language, while preserving the integrity of the message. In most cases, this is done in a booth with purpose-built technology, using the simultaneous mode. It is a demanding job that requires experience, skill, discipline and hard work. Our special guest this week is conference interpreter, Karine Bachelier and we will chat about what being a conference interpreter entails. Guest Bio: Karine Bachelier is a conference interpreter whose career started as a full-time interpreter and translator for the Government of New Caledonia and was based within the T&I section of an international organisation, The Pacific Community (SPC), with its Head Quarters in Noumea. After more than 4 years in this very demanding role, she came back to Australia and has been working as a freelance interpreter and translator since. She also teaches interpreting and translation skills in postgraduate programs in Melbourne.
