Sheet membrane waterproofing has become the choice of many installers, Pros, and DIYs alike. The advantage of using sheet membrane over a pan liner is that you only need to do one layer of dry pack mortar, and the dry pack never becomes saturated after shower use. Saturated dry pack mortar beds become problematic, especially when weep holes get clogged and the water wicks up and over the curb, causing the shower to rot from the outside in. Sheet membrane, such as Kerdi or FloFX NoFlo, is better than liquid waterproofing, such as RedGard or HydroBan, because you do not need to wait until the dry pack fully cures before installing it. Some mortar beds require up to 10 days to fully dry out before you can install the liquid membranes. Sheet membrane can be installed on an uncured daypack, saving days of waiting. By folding the sides of the sheet membrane up the wall 2", over 20 feet of potential leak points can be avoided, as the membrane is continuous instead of seamed together with banding.
