Grouting external porcelain tiles, which must always be a minimum 20mm thick, is a specialist subject due to the nature of the material, which is extremely dense and almost impervious, which prevents many paving mortars and gouts from bonding to the sides of the joints, which can accelerate cracking due to thermal movement. Additionally the joints are generally narrow from 3mm to 6mm, never much more or it reduces the visual appeal or porcelain paving, but unfortunately this also causes issues for many external grouting materials. This includes fully compacting into the joints, developing the necessary strengths and correlation (tensile to compressive) of strengths, module of elasticity (to accommodate movement) and retain sufficient bond to the sides. GftK's vdw 815 Paving Joint Mortar is a unique, 2-component, epoxy resin based, material that is designed for the durable sealing of these narrow joints (generally from min. 3mm to max. 8mm), making it ideal for grouting porcelain paving with these joint widths. However, it is also important to consider the potential variations in porcelain tile dimensions, and the practical aspects of laying to the right tolerances to maintain line and level, as well as the joint lines. Therefore the normally recommended spacing for larger format external porcelain tiles is 5-8mm to avoid edge damage and joint width variation issues. When grouting newly laid porcelain after the tiles are firmly bonded in position and strong enough to walk on, the surface must always be rinsed clean and then dried. This is also an opportune time to protect the pristine surface against future staining and residues from building works and then normal 'patio surface' exposures to the spillages of potentially all the ingredients of a good BBQ and Garden Parties, making the surfaces easier to clean and maintain. This is done very easily at this time by applying NCC Porcelain Tile Protector and allowing this to dry, prior to the grouting operation, which this treatment also facilitates, making final cleaning an easy task too! As the video shows, mix the 2-components of the GftK vdw 815+ together thoroughly until the mix is fully homogeneous, which should be for around 3 minutes. Pre-wet the paving and then pour out the vdw 815+ as shown, using more water to help it flow into the joints, you can't use too much water at this time. Continue moving the mortar with a rubber squeegee as it effectively self-compacts into the joints. Once filed leave for a few minutes and then use a wet coconut brush to remove any excess, using more water in a fine wide spray as required to remove any residual material and clean the surface. Job done! This video shows GftK's vdw 815plus application on new porcelain paving, but GftK's vdw 815plus is also equally ideal for use in narrow joints from 3mm wide and 20mm deep, on new natural stone paving, and for paving repointing projects.
