I took this short flight to a relatively new boutique hotel in the Inanda region, about 25 km northwest of Durban, to keep myself current, practice confined landing procedures, and try their breakfast while at it. I executed a summit landing, in which the transition from hovering out-of-ground-effect to hovering in-ground-effect occurs abruptly due to the sudden interaction of the summit ground with rotor downwash, which occurs gradually in a normal or even a steep approach. The sudden air cushion created under the helicopter caused it to momentarily oscillate in bank and yaw (15:37). This was accentuated by the recirculation of the rotor downwash created by the bricked boundary wall seen to the right of the helipad. The steep incline and stone landscaping to the left of the helipad also created a second recirculation of the rotor downwash, resulting in a second but smaller bank oscillation moment (15:57). All the while, I kept a lookout for the white columns and the dried shrub blown against the boundary wall by the rotor downwash.
