The creation of the Memorial to the Victims of Communism and to the Resistance is a means of counteracting this victory, a means to resuscitate the collective memory. Made up of the Sighet Museum and the International Centre for Studies into Communism, based in Bucharest, as well as being the organiser of the Summer School the Memorial is an institution of Memory, unique in that it is simultaneously an institute of research, museography and education. To the question, “Can memory be relearned?” the answer of the Memorial to the Victims of Communism and to the Resistance in Romania is a resounding “Yes”.”(Ana Blandiana) 🔔 The Nail where the Romanian Map hangs, Sighetu Marmatiei Located in the northern tip of Romania, the town of Sighetu Marmației is famous as the place where "the map hangs on the nail", which is why a monument in the shape of a nail, with a height of about two meters, was placed here. The unique monument that can be seen in the historical area of the city, has become, in a short time, one of the main attractions sought by tourists. 🔔 King CHARLES’ House in BREB Village, Maramureș County A great lover of Romanian traditions and the beauty of Transylvania, King Charles bought several properties in our country over time. Although he has never made any public statement related to the number of his properties, it is known that King Charles owns four houses in the village of Valea Zălanului in Covasna, the Apafi Mansion in the locality of Mălâncrav, Sibiu county, the already famous house in Viscri, Brașov county, and four more houses in the village of Breb in Maramureș.He bought his first property in Romania in 2003: it is one of the houses in the village of Breb, several hundred years old, which he restored. Breb also brought three more wooden houses that he bought in the area and moved them to the Maramureş village, which became famous in Great Britain. The prince tried to preserve the authenticity of these dwellings. All the houses he rehabilitated were made with traditional materials.Charles was involved in several philanthropic projects in Romania. In particular, he supported architectural heritage and environmental conservation projects, promoting sustainable development in Romanian rural areas. Through his foundation, King Charles supported various initiatives in Romania, with an emphasis on rural development, sustainable agriculture, preservation of traditions, and promotion of tourism. 🔔 Pasul Gutâi, an awe-inspiring hairpinned drive Pasul Gutâi is a mountain pass at an elevation of 993m (3,257ft) above the sea level, located in the Maramureș County, northern Romania. The drive offers spectacular views over endless forest. The road to the summit, also known as Gutin Pass, Paltinu Pass, Paltinului Pass or Pintea Pass is totally paved but very hairpinned on its southern slope. It’s called DN 18 road. The pass is 28.5 km (17.7 miles) long and runs from Baia Sprie towards Mara travelling through the "Russian mountains". Drive at moderate speed. You’re not on a race and the road is very curvy.Nestled in the Eastern Carpathians, the drive is very scenic running through the beautiful natural scenery of Maramures. In 2015 a wooden crucifix was erected near the summit. Always check the weather forecast before you start your journey, especially in winters.
