In this episode of the True Adventure TV series from the early 1960s, viewers go on an expedition through the Northwest Passage with the U.S. Coast Guard. The episode opens with dramatic shots of the Arctic, including an ice shelf breaking off (00:08). Host Bill Burrud discusses the Coast Guard’s voyage through the Northwest Passage. There are various shots of the Arctic Ocean with a number of different ships navigating its waterways (02:23). The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Bramble sails out of Miami Harbor (02:47). The Bramble arrives at the Panama Canal and sails along the waterway, passing Gatun Lake and the canal city of Gamboa (04:41). A coastal shot of Acapulco (05:25) shows the next stage in the journey. Here, members of the Coast Guard have a bit of free time, enjoying the sandy beach. Back at sea, a Coast Guard plane arrives to evacuate a sick member of the crew (06:12; 06:28). The Bramble arrives at Seattle harbor where more Coast Guard ships wait to join the expedition (06:59), including the Coast Guard’s Spar and the Navy’s icebreaker Burton Island (07:25). Gear and supplies are loaded onto the ships, including an emergency heater. The ships leave the harbor eventually cross the Arctic Circle, moving into the Beaufort Sea (09:28). A helicopter brings mail from Cape Perry to the Bramble (10:08). The cutters push through ice fields (10:37) in Amundsen Gulf, but eventually become stuck. A helicopter takes off from a cutter to look for a new path. A sunset shot shows the stark beauty of the ice field and frozen sea (12:45. Men set explosives to break ice (13:08), with minimal success. The episode shows several shots of the ships stuck in icefields (14:00) and being pushed farther off the water; two of the cutters are pushed against each other. The Coast Guard’s Storis pushes through a gap in the ice (15:18), and the other cutters follow. Men dive in Cambridge Bay to look for damage to hull of ships (15:44). Men make shore at Cambridge Bay and greet Eskimos (16:00); then they haul parts for a radio tower (16:50), drill into the frozen soil, and erect the tower (17:30). The Storis guides resupply ships (17:44) through the ice on the sea. The episode shows the crew working inside a cutter, charting the path for the expedition. The Canadian icebreaker HMCS Labrador waits at the approach to Bellot Strait. The group of ships and the helicopter go through Bellot Strait (19:42), completing the Northwest Passage. The flotilla stops at Old Hudson’s Bay outpost (20:38). The cutters pass massive icebergs (21:15) on their way back to the Atlantic. The ships pass Boston, Massachusetts, with a great shot of the city from the water (22:03). The men of the Bramble stop and celebrate their trip through the Northwest Passage, as a band plays (22:48). The Spar arrives at its home port of Bristol, Rhode Island (23:07); people greet the men of the Spar. The episode concludes with a shot of the Bramble at sea (24:04) before it arrives home in Miami.
