Zoom H3-VR: 5.1 Surround Sound Tutorial

Hi everyone, this is John from Zoom, and I’m here to explain how to record 5.1 channel Surround Sound using the H3-VR. 5.1 channel surround is the standard surround sound format for Home Theatre systems. Mixing Mono and Stereo sources for 5.1 surround sound can be difficult, but if we use Ambisonics recording, we can easily create a 5.1 surround sound file with immersive quality. With a built-in Ambisonic mic, recorder and decoder, the H3-VR is the complete solution for capturing and processing Ambisonics audio. You can use this 5.1 mix for ambience or background audio in your video production and mix in dialogue and additional audio from other sources, such as shotgun and lavalier microphones. To start, you will need your H3-VR, and Zoom’s Ambisonics Player software. This can be downloaded from Zoom-na.com The Zoom Ambisonics Player is able to convert to 5.1 channel Surround from Ambisonics A or Ambisonics B, FuMa or AmbiX. For this purpose, we recommend selecting Ambisonics A format since this offers the most options in post-production. To select the recording mode, press the MENU button, scroll down to Rec Settings and select it. Next select Rec Mode then select Ambisonics A. Once you have finished recording, you will need to transfer the file to your computer. You can connect the H3-VR to your computer using a micro USB cable, then set the device to SD card reader mode. Press the MENU button, scroll to USB and select it, then select Card Reader. Alternatively, you can insert the SD card directly into your computer’s SD card reader . Once the file is copied to your computer, you can import it into the Zoom Ambisonics Player application. Simply drag and drop the file into the File List. Next, click on the file to select it. Click on the 5.1 Surround listening mode at the top of the window, then select Play to preview the file. You can adjust the listener’s position by clicking and dragging the vertical, horizontal, and roll sliders. Once you have finished making your adjustments, you are ready to Export the file. Click the Export button at the bottom right of the window, select the location, then select Save.
