The United States carried out the execution of Joseph Paul Franklin, the white supremacist serial killer who claimed he wanted to start a “racial war.” Franklin was responsible for a string of racially and religiously motivated murders across several states during the 1970s and 1980s, targeting African Americans, interracial couples, and Jewish people. He confessed to killing more than 20 people, including the sniper-style shooting of two Black teenagers in 1977 and the attack outside a synagogue in Missouri that left one person dead. Franklin also admitted to attempting to assassinate civil rights leader Vernon Jordan and porn publisher Larry Flynt, who was left paralyzed. After decades on death row, Franklin was executed by lethal injection at the Missouri Department of Corrections in 2013. When asked if he had any final words, he calmly said he had none. Moments later, he was pronounced dead.
