... relax, just a wonderful journey through time ! As The Grateful Dead, and many of us, and you, loved, and heard it. Give peace. "The Deal" (The Grateful Dead) : LoloYodel Montage using 6 different concerts (see below). First played live on 02/19/71 (Capitol Theater, Port Chester, NY) and was played a total of 419 times and thus uninterrupted over 24 years. It was exclusively a 1st set song. From 1971 to mid-1977, it was played essentially in the middle of that same 1st set and by mid-end of 1997 'til 1995 was the 1st set closer (only occasionally to be followed by a song such as "Let it Grow"). Notes from David Dodd : The "Deal", a crafted gem, is about a narrative of the American West, pre-automobile, similar to songs like “Me & My Uncle”, “Jack Straw”, “Candyman”, “Mexicali Blues”, “El Paso”, … set in the same time and place. Nonetheless, well-enough settled to have plenty of bars and houses of ill-repute. The characters may, or may not, be cowboys, but they do seem, generally, to be gamblers, or thieves, or both. Hunter’s lyric opens with the cryptic statement, “Since it cost a lot to win, and even more to lose…” Is it a choice, if we win or if we lose? Not usually. The chorus brings forward that particular aspect of Grateful Dead wisdom : “Goes to show, you don’t ever know…” Hunter beautifully catches vernacular American speech in the second verse in particular, with a novelist’s each for dialogue: “I been gambling hereabouts for ten good solid years. If I told you all that went down it would burn off both your ears.” Dennis McNally, in his biography of the band, tells the story of Garcia’s recording the album as a way to raise some badly-needed cash—for a home purchase. And he links the opening and closing songs on Garcia: “Deal” and “Wheel,” to the wheeling and dealing necessary to raising the cash. I dunno, that just never sounded right to me somehow… but it’s a fun story”. --------------- Editor's Notes : Audio from the 7/19/89 Alpine as it truely rocks ! The black & white 1977 video, as odd it is seems, also brings life. I could also have used the 1971 Heurouville France video but it only is of the 1st verse AND taken from the back side. Watch 0:33 Jerry singing like "Tweedy Bird" 1:48 Jerry's head into the groove 3:16 Mickey Hart exploding on his drums 3:48 Garcia dancin' in his song 4:08 launch-pad ... ! 7:20 The Dead clearly in their "spiritual-box" ! Watch ! They're electric ! 9:38 Jerry bringing down the final end-note ! Powerful. Audio : 07/19/1989 Alpine Valley Music Theatre, Alpine Valley, Wisconsin Videos : 04/26/1977 Capitol Theatre, Passaic, New Jersey (black & white) 10/31/1980 Radio City Music Hall, New York, NY (Vault Video) 03/28/1981 Essen Germany (TV Pro-Shot) 07/24/1987 Oakland Stadium, Oakland, Ca (View From The Vault) 07/04/1989 Rich Stadium, Orchard Park (Buffalo), NY ("Truckin' Upto Buffalo") 07/19/1989 Alpine Valley Music Theatre, Alpine Valley, Wisconsin ("Downhill From Here") PS : if you wish to differenciate between the two 1989 shows, Jerry is wearing a black tee-shirt ... haha ... otherwise Bob is pink in Buffalo and Hawaian Blue in Alpine Valley... ----------------- Buy all of Official / Commercial videos.
