Low blood pressure is defined as a systolic reading below 90 mmHg and a diastolic reading below 60 mmHg. For healthy individuals without symptoms, blood pressure readings lower than the standard definition may still be considered normal. The most common symptom of low blood pressure is dizziness and lightheadedness, often due to inadequate blood supply to the brain. Orthostatic hypotension occurs when a person experiences a sudden drop in blood pressure upon standing up from a sitting or lying position. Fainting, the second most common symptom, happens when blood pressure drops significantly, causing temporary loss of consciousness. Blurred vision, the third most common symptom, is caused by reduced blood flow to the eyes and requires further investigation. Fatigue and weakness result from organs receiving insufficient nutrients and oxygen. Nausea, often accompanied by cold, slightly sweaty skin, is a symptom of low blood pressure. Dehydration, from conditions like diarrhea, vomiting, or excessive sweating with insufficient fluid intake, is a common cause of hypotension. Diuretics, heart problems (including heart failure and heart attack), endocrine issues, large meals, and anemia are notable causes of low blood pressure. Increasing fluid and salt intake is a first-line treatment for symptomatic hypotension, with caution advised for those with heart or kidney failure. Compression stockings can alleviate symptoms by reducing blood pooling in the legs, especially beneficial for orthostatic hypotension. Eating small, frequent meals can improve symptoms of postprandial hypotension. Physical maneuvers, like crossing legs and tensing muscles, help manage orthostatic hypotension during posture changes. Midodrine, ephedrine, and supplements like Vitamin B12, iron, and caffeine can help increase blood pressure and manage symptoms of hypotension.
