Attack on a Shia mosque in Pakistan:56 dead, 194 hurt | NewsRme

A suicide bomber detonated a bomb at a Shia mosque in Peshawar, northwest Pakistan, killing at least 56 people and injuring 194. It was Pakistan's worst assault since 2018. Moments before Friday prayers were to begin, a bomb ripped through the Kocha Risaldar neighborhood of the city, shattering the inside and showering the streets with shattered glass. It happened on the opening day of a cricket Test match between Pakistan and Australia at Rawalpindi, some 190 kilometers to the east. Australia has not visited Pakistan in over a quarter-century due to security concerns. According to Muhammad Asim Khan, a spokesperson at Peshawar's Lady Reading Hospital, the death toll has risen to 56, the most since a July 2018 bomb at an election rally killed 149 people, according to the local branch of the Islamic State. 50 of the 194 injured, he claimed, were in "critical condition." The incident was not immediately claimed by any organisation. The incident was a "suicide assault," according to Muhammad Ali Saif, a spokesperson for the province administration of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and multiple witnesses reported the time of detonation. Before Friday prayers, Ali Asghar observed a guy enter the mosque and begin "fire with a handgun," taking out people "one by one." Asghar said that he "then blew himself up." "Before he entered the mosque, I observed a guy fire at two police officers. I heard a loud blast a few seconds later "Zahid Khan, another witness, agreed. To increase the damage, the assailant exploded five to eight kilos (two to four pounds) of "very explosive TNT" packed with ball bearings, according to Rab Nawaz Khan, the chief of Peshawar's bomb disposal squad. At the bomb scene, where anxious family members were pushed back by police, an AFP correspondent observed body parts scattered around. Two assailants were engaged, according to Peshawar police head Muhammad Ijaz Khan. Two police officers were fired at the mosque's entrance, he added. "One police officer died on the scene, while the other was seriously wounded," he claimed. "We have declared an emergency at the hospitals," Muhammad Asim Khan, a spokesperson at Peshawar's Lady Reading Hospital, said. "More wounded are being brought." The incident was "highly denounced," according to a spokeswoman for Prime Minister Imran Khan's office. Pakistan's Sunni majority has lately been fighting a revival of the Taliban's home chapter, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
