Somehow the early evening flight of a man known (so far) only as Richard moves me. I take a lonely but weirdly hopeful feeling away from the ideas and images... The notion of a man who by his own account was “broken” searching for a moment’s peace and wanting (for his own reasons) to see the Orca carrying her dead calf on her back while swimming around the sea with her moves me. And let me add this note as I register some of the feedback (mostly positive and certainly appreciated) coming my way: this world seems to be getting meaner by the minute. Now that may be empirically inaccurate as hell, but it is a feeling and I'm damn sure I'm not alone in feeling it. Richard Russell appeared to be looking for some way to leave his troubles behind and in the process he took a second to think of others. He didn't want to "mess up" anyone else's day. He felt guilty. He was sorry. Where I live that's all very human and so I don't think I wasted the sadness that led me to craft this brief recounting of an ultimately tragic event. I have an idea Richard Russell will be missed. I won't censor comments unless I decide they are shitting on that sensibility. Then I will....
