Empress Zelyra of Xylar Prime, desperate to save her world from a corporate takeover, wagers her entire planet on a human "beastmaster" named Brett Kaiden. The task: tame a Krak'thar predator, "Tank," that has gone violently mad. Brett realizes the creature isn't mad, but tortured by a sonic device planted by High Advisor Varek. By removing the device and establishing himself as the Alpha, Brett wins the planet. Instead of exiling Zelyra, he hires her as Executive Administrator. When Varek launches a coup with mercenaries and mechs, Brett uses his Alpha status and Zelyra's help to command the entire, now-loyal Krak'thar pack—three hundred apex predators—to crush the invasion. With the planet secured and Varek executed, Brett returns the sovereign authority to Zelyra, choosing partnership and love over solo conquest.
