The U.S. military is eyeing SpaceX’s famous Starship. What… what does the military actually want from a giant rocket that could end up being the biggest and most capable ever built? Okay, all jokes aside, imagine if they had a Starship of their own — or if SpaceX built a special “military Starship” just for them. The crazy part is, this is more real than you might think, and it’s something both SpaceX and the Pentagon have already talked about. Suddenly, the whole idea becomes a pretty big deal — and definitely something worth talking about. So the question is: what would a “military Starship” even look like? SpaceX's NEW Starship prototype for the Military will be Something Never Seen Before... Vandenberg Space Force Base might be opening the door to something big — possibly even SpaceX’s Starship. Here’s what’s going on. Late last year, on Dec. 29, the U.S. Space Force put out a request for information (RFI) asking companies if they’d be interested in using a brand-new launch site at Vandenberg called Space Launch Complex 14, or SLC-14. This spot sits near the southern tip of the base and, at the moment, it’s basically a blank slate — undeveloped land with zero launch infrastructure in place. The Space Force is looking for companies that want to launch heavy or super-heavy rockets from the site. In their definition, “heavy” vehicles can lift between 20,000 and 50,000 kilograms to low Earth orbit, while “super-heavy” rockets can haul more than 50,000 kilograms. SpaceX's NEW Starship prototype for the Military will be Something Never Seen Before... According to the RFI, adding this kind of launch capability at Vandenberg would be a big win for national security. It would allow the military to deploy larger, more capable satellites and respond faster during emergencies. The Space Force also says it would improve resilience, add diversity to its launch options, and speed up the process of rebuilding satellite constellations if needed. They’re pretty confident about the location, too. The RFI calls SLC-14 the “most viable site” at Vandenberg for heavy and super-heavy launches. It would be the southernmost launch complex on base, and while it’s several kilometers away from utilities and other infrastructure, the only nearby constraint mentioned is a rail line about 600 meters from the site boundary. That said, there are some strings attached. Any company interested in SLC-14 has to show it’s financially solid enough to build and operate a launch site from scratch. The Space Force makes it clear it wants a well-funded provider to avoid projects stalling out due to money issues.
