Northeast Indiana Trains - January/February 2001

This is 99% Indiana and mostly Norfolk Southern. There is just one scene in Ohio (Van Wert) so that’s why I left Ohio out of the title. I had bought a new Super VHS-C camera in January, but ended up returning it as the quality was not that great. I ended up sticking with the regular VHS-C format for a little bit longer. My footage notes are below. I filmed the majority of this footage with a Panasonic PV-L452 VHS-C Palmcorder. The footage from January 10 - 18 was filmed with a JVC GRSXM520U Super VHS-C Camcorder. Most scenes are shot with a tripod. I use Shotcut for video editing. Ohio locations: Van Wert January 1 00:00 New Haven, IN - Hartzell Rd. - Southbound CSX C721 + Grain train (CSX 6359, CSX 5958). This was a combined train - 110 cars and the longest train I had ever seen on this line. 02:20 Hoagland, IN - The snowmobilers keep me entertained as I wait for the train. We had gotten a lot of snow overnight and in the previous month. Another railfan spotted, too. January 4 06:47 Ossian, IN - CR 850N - NS 177 east (NS 8396, SSW 9690) 08:47 Kingsland, IN - CR 500N - NS L80 west (NS 7063) with those 2 GM shutdown cars mentioned by the dispatcher. 09:14 Yoder, IN - NS 251 east (NS 2590, NS 5306) 09:57 Van Wert, OH - Estry - CSX Q357 west (CSX 7664, CSX 8240) with a pretty sweet K5H horn meets CSX C726 (CSX 5903, CSX 4413), who has cleared up on the industrial track. 11:26 Maples, IN - Franke Rd. - CSX Q357 in fading light with a couple of extra toots for the cameraman. January 7 13:27 Fort Wayne, IN - Engle Rd. (New Castle District) - NS 60T east (NS 6671, NS 8864). 60T was a potash train that went to Muscle Shoals, AL. I believe it originated in Alberta. January 10 15:42 Elkhart, IN Station (CP 421) - Westbound NS (NS 9210), NS 681 west (BNSF 8890, BNSF 9967) January 11 18:17 Elkhart, IN Station NS 47E (NS 8989, NS 9075), this train was the old Conrail GREL (Grand Rapids - Elkhart) NS 664 east (BN 9444, BN 9476 - both still unpatched) Return at night - NS 666 east (BN 9240, BN 9228 ‘triclops’ and EMDX SD60 - one of the Oakways) NS 49E west (NS 4806, NS 6179) this train was the old Conrail STEL. NS 10M east (NS 6639), formerly Conrail ELCO NS I3W west - extra 23W (NS 9506, NS 2514) NS 21Z (NS 8418, NS 9583 in primer) with NS 13Q on the North Freight. January 18 26:03 Yoder, IN - NS X65 east (NS 9588, NS 2901), extra 465 27:05 Ossian IN - CR 1050N - NS Z0T east (NS 6571, NS 9396, NS 3529), extra 60T January 20 29:55 Fort Wayne, IN - Taylor St. - NS 174 west (NS 2533, NS 8848) 31:41 Fort Wayne, IN - Nuttman Ave. - NS 276 east (NS 6585, NS 9035) January 21 32:37 Dunfee, IN - County Line Rd. - NS 15R east (NS 6506, NS 7143) meets NS 217 west (NS 8992, NS 4148, NS 7009) 36:55 Fort Wayne, IN - Engle Rd. - NS X65 east (the previous 15R) on the New Castle District. This was basically how NS ran between Elkhart and Cincinnati before the connector at Claypool was built. 15R ran Elkhart to Fort Wayne via Osborn and at Fort Wayne it became X65 or 465, changed crews, and turned south. January 24 38:51 Ossian, IN - CR 1050N - NS 465 east (NS 6635, NS 3270) with NSTSA 173.5 February 6 40:32 Ossian, IN - CR 1050N - NS 218 east (NS 2502, NS 8355) in the snow with NSTSA 173.5 February 10 42:07 New Haven, IN - Broadway St. - NS 17K west (IC 6057, IC 6030, IC 6200, IC 6253, IC 6140), this train went to the IC/CN at Tolono, IL. It and its counterpart 16K frequently had IC or CN power. 42:48 Fort Wayne, IN - Lumbard St. - 17K again - just barely made it here in time, NS 10E east (NS 9442, NS 2766, NS 6667, NS 4028) February 11 44:48 Fort Wayne, IN - Pleasant Center Rd. - NS 217 west (NS 6091, NS 2831, NS 9178), in the background are F16s taking off from Runway 5 at Fort Wayne International. 46:07 Kingsland, IN - CR 400N - NS M97 east (NS 5156, NS 5074, NS 1611) followed by NS 885 (NS 6596) cool P5 horn. 49:51 Bluffton, IN - CR 150N (Madison St.) - NS 197 east (NS 5431, NS 5292) February 13 51:06 Corunna, IN - CR 3 - NS 20E east (NS 9469, NS 9402) 52:24 Kendallville, IN - Main St. - NS M0M east (UP 9484, UP 6360, UP 4177) extra 10M 52:55 Waterloo, IN - CP 367 - NS 14N east (NS 9582, NS 8326, NS 7116) and NS B43 west (NS 3030, NS 3014) with unique RS3L and good echoing. 55:09 Auburn, IN - CR 37 - CSX Q110 east (CSX 7507, CSX 7667) 56:53 Fort Wayne, IN - Engle Rd. - NS 21G west (NS 7004) this train was “as needed” Danville KY - Detroit Oakwood Yd. NS created it due to excess volume and length restrictions on NS 196 and NS 230. February 18 58:18 Yoder, IN - NS X65 east (NS 3503, NS 2769) 59:14 Ossian, IN - CR 1050N - same train 1:00:10 Fort Wayne, IN - Pleasant Center Rd. - NS 217 west (NS 9512, NS 9097) February 21 1:01:46 Monroeville, IN - NS 20T east (NS 9606, NS 9604)
