Who's still missing Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers in 2025? Me... An analysis I've always wanted to do. The Riding Home theme is obvious, with alternating female vocals and male rock elements, used in so many Shadowbringers songs that everyone can recognize. But the character theme variations are the truly excellent part of the OST arrangement. The dark, gloomy, angry, aggressive yet stirring and unyielding theme of Hades/Emet-Selch; the bright and proud theme of the Crystal Exarch; and Ardbert’s theme, which feels like a distant memory or a dream of the old days, the three themes are in fact built on the same leitmotif. With changes in mode, rhythm, tempo, dynamics, and orchestration, they create three distinct characteristics. One theme + variations is a common approach in game and film music. I also love writing this way as a film and game composer myself. It’s memorable, creates a sense of familiarity and call and response, but also can create different emotions and support various scenes. And the Shadowbringers OST is a fantastic piece that achieves all of these. The song Tears in the Rain could also be considered the Flood of Light or Warrior of Light theme (yes, us!). As one of the main characters, the player also shares the same musical motif with three key characters. We are all Shadowbringers. If you love this video, please like, share, comment, and subscribe!
