So, we're back for one more round with Robin Thomas after my last video with him (link below), in which he spoke up about something really important: the dark side of tango, in particular that of certain men who like to prey on (young) beginner women, and how we can try to keep that behavior in check. This time, Robin brings up something that similarly requires some real courage to talk about in public: ageism, meaning how older dancers get judged and possibly discriminated against, based on their age. I think we all know that ageism happens in tango (to varying degrees, that is), and I've particularly understood from older women that it can be difficult to deal with. When Robin started dancing 25 years ago, ageism wasn't really a thing in tango, as the community was small and everybody danced with everybody. Back then, as a thirty-something, Robin had a dream: he wanted to bring more young people into the New York City tango scene, and he succeeded. However, along the way, he also discovered that this ultimately led to some kind of segregation, as the younger people preferred to dance among themselves. This video presents a balanced view of ageism in tango as something that can be sad, but also a "fact of life", just like ageism happens outside of tango. Having become older himself, Robin reflects on how to deal with this reality, but he also asks critical questions about how ageism may be justified in some ways: being older can bring certain physical and mental obstacles, whether we like it or not.
