We were delighted to speak with Chris Southworth, Secretary General of the International Chamber of Commerce UK, during our special coverage of the 14th WTO Ministerial Conference in Yaoundé. As he rightly noted, “this is a crossroads moment for the multilateral trading system,” and “a good dose of pragmatism is what we need.” Our conversation explored the risks to global growth if reforms stall, what this moment means for developing economies, and the urgent need to modernize the system. His insights on dispute settlement reform and restoring trust in the WTO framework were particularly valuable. A striking takeaway was his call for African countries to think beyond traditional approaches - stepping out of comfort zones to build new trade partnerships in Europe and parts of Asia.
