In this video, we are doing Ex. 35 from the book practicing words having the sound of ST and STR. Loop ST - The combination st, as in steam, mist, past etc. is represented by a loop made half the length of the stroke to which it is attached. 1. Like the circle s, the st loop is written with the left motion to straight strokes and inside curves 2. Like the circle s, the st loop is always read first at the beginning of the stroke and last at the end. 3. The st loop cannot be employed finally when a vowel sound follows t. 4. The st loop may be used initially, medially or finally. 5. The st loop may be employed finally to represent the sound of zd. Loop STR - A large loop, extending two-thirds of the length of the stroke to which it is attached represents str (ster) e.g pastor, faster 1. This str loop is never written at the beginning of the stroke. 2. Like the circle s and the st loop, the str loop is written with the left motion to straight strokes and inside curves. 3. The st loop cannot be employed when a vowel occurs between s and t nor can the str loop be written when a strongly sounded vowel occurs between st and r. The long vowels (thick dot and thick dash) can be remembered by repeating the sentence "Pa may we all go too?" i.e word pa giving sound ah, may - a, we - e, all - aw, go - o, too - oo. The short vowels (light dot and light dash) can be remembered by repeating the sentence "That pen is not much good". i.e word that giving sound a, pen - e, is - i, not - o, much - u, good - oo. Always practice Pitman Shorthand with pencil and make the thin strokes, light vowel signs LIGHT and thick strokes, dark vowel signs DARK.
