It connects the Chamonix Valley (and more broadly the Arve Valley) to the south with the Vallorcine Valley (France) and the Trient Valley (Valais, Switzerland) to the north. The pass reaches an altitude of 1,461 meters (4,793 feet). The road crossing the Col des Montets is generally open year-round, though it can be temporarily closed due to heavy snowfall or avalanche risk. In such cases, a railway tunnel, the Tunnel des Montets, which runs beneath the pass, can be used by vehicles in an alternating one-way system with trains. The Col des Montets has featured several times in the Tour de France cycling race. An information center for the Aiguilles Rouges National Nature Reserve is located at the summit of the pass, offering a botanical trail for visitors. The 46th parallel north passes near the col and is marked by a plaque. The Col de la Forclaz is a mountain pass in the Swiss Alps, located in the canton of Valais. It connects the town of Martigny in the Rhône Valley with the village of Le Châtelard near the French border. The pass sits at an elevation of 1,527 meters (5,010 feet) and the road leading to it from Martigny has a maximum gradient of 12%. From Le Châtelard, the road continues to Chamonix in France via the Col des Montets. The Col de la Forclaz offers panoramic views of the Rhône Valley and the surrounding mountains. A notable wooden cross stands near the summit, commemorating the death of a local priest in 1944. The pass is generally open throughout the year. The Col de la Forclaz has also been a stage in the Tour de France on several occasions. Historically, the pass gained importance with the rise of tourism in the Chamonix region during the 19th century.
