A. Aswad - Roots Rockin B. Aswad - Rockin Dub Label: Simba - 12SM005 This edition of Double 12" Spin takes us to the UK in 1983, the year that saw the release of one of Aswad's most iconic songs, Roots Rockin. Formed in London in 1975, Aswad quickly established themselves as pioneers of roots reggae, delivering socially conscious lyrics that resonated with the experiences of Black people in the UK. Despite various lineup changes, founding members Brinsley "Chaka B" Forde and Angus "Drummie Zeb" Gaye, along with later addition Tony "Gad" Robinson, remained the core of the group. Aswad's music took a more commercial turn in the mid-1980s, leading to a series of international hits, such as Don't Look Around, The Best Of My Love and Shine. Despite this shift in style, the group's popularity remained strong. In 1996, founding member Brinsley "Chaka B" Forde left the group and embarked on a solo career. Tragically, drummer Angus "Drummie Zeb" Gaye passed away in September 2022 at the age of 62. Aswad's Roots Rockin gained significant popularity following their performance at Splashin' the Palace '84, where they delivered a freestyle rendition of the song. The song is also featured on their live album, Live And Direct, recorded at the 1983 Notting Hill Carnival, which is widely regarded as one of the best live reggae albums of all time. Released on Aswad's own label, Simba Records, Roots Rockin was produced by the group and Michael "Reuben" Campbell, their manager and producer, who sadly passed away in 2021 at the age of 71. A. Peter Hunnigale - Love Is Here To Stay (Radio Mix) B. Peter Hunnigale - Love Is Here To Stay (Disco Mix) Label: Street Vibes - SV 032 The second single features the soulful voice of Petere Hunnigale. Born in London in 1960, Hunnigale, often referred to as Mr. Honey Vibes, began his music career in the early 1980s. He gained recognition for his sweet lovers rock style, often collaborating with producer, drummer, and sound engineer Fitzroy "Wizard" Blake through their Street Vibes label. While primarily known for his lovers rock sound, Hunnigale also excelled in roots reggae, producing notable work with producers like Mad Professor. Hunnigale's career took off in the second half of the 1980s, with a string of hit singles and albums. His collaboration with deejay Tippa Irie on the 1989 track Ragamuffin Girl was a major hit, significantly enhancing his popularity. While working with producers like Gussie Clarke in Jamaica, Hunnigale also collaborated with UK labels such as Saxon, Fashion Records, Stingray, and Peckings Records. Despite a decline in output in recent years, he remains a beloved figure in the UK and European reggae scene. This 12" single features Peter Hunnigale's rendition of Love Is Here To Stay, originally written by Johnny Osbourne. Osbourne's 1980 recording of the song for Studio One, based on The Bassies' 1967 River Jordan riddim, became a popular hit. Hunnigale's version of the track was also well-received by audiences.
