Nitin Desai started delaying repayments from end of 2018: Edelweiss to HC

Art director Nitin Desai who was found hanging at his Karjat studio on August 2 reportedly delayed his loan repayments from 2018-end. According to reports, a total loan of ₹ 181 crore was given to Nitin Desai by Edelweiss Financial Services in 2018. The senior officials of Edelweiss Financial Services in their submission to the Bombay High Court through a senior counsel requested the court to quash the abetment charges on the company claiming that abetment involves constant instigation and mens rea which are absent in this case. The counsel also clarified that Desai ‘used to take loans earlier too’ and further stated ‘From the end of 2018, there was a delay in the repayment schedule. Let me not call it default. There were delays.’ In an earlier statement, Edelweiss had also denied that any undue pressure was put on the art director for loan recovery. Meanwhile, Desai had criticised a financial services firm to which his company owed money in a voice note that was recovered by the police after his alleged suicide. Reportedly, he was heard saying that his company could not come out of the financial crisis it was facing because of the procedure adopted by the financial services firm.
