“Strange Noise” was made with absolutely no sense of direction or storyboarding. As per the assignment’s request, I wanted to create something that would make little to no sense thematically and instead focus on my editing skills in DaVinci Resolve. I ended up playing around a ton with colouring and was able to create some really cool distorted and colourful edits. Transitions were a key part of my project as I didn’t want to just paste clips back-to-back without some sort of flow or “glue” between them. There are a couple parts throughout my video where the transitions kind of seamlessly guide the viewer from clip to clip in a way that almost seems hypnotic. Although the quality throughout the video gets distorted fairly often, that is an element I wanted to embrace, so I kept it a somewhat consistent theme throughout. While I had access to a professional Canon camera, around half of my footage was actually filmed on my Fujifilm digital camera, which is waterproof. This made for some really neat and unique footage that I hope will differentiate itself from traditional video shooting! The footage I filmed just came to me wherever I went. I took my cameras to vastly different places, including Bird Kingdom as well as a Chinese Lunar New Year event! In terms of the audio, I just chose an ambient sounding synth on my music software and played some random notes. The first half of the video is played in C minor, while the latter half is played in major. I’m not huge into music theory though so take that significance with a grain of salt. The reverbed audio that plays throughout the video has been reversed and manipulated in different ways throughout the project, and all the audio comes from my clips, though they don’t line up with their respective footage. “Strange Noise” was essentially just a combination of adding ideas on the fly and seeing what stuck, while also trying to push past my usual comfort zone in editing.
