Revisit the exciting launch of THOR 2, which took place on May 20, 1997, from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, powered by the Delta II rocket. Developed by Boeing (formerly Hughes), this satellite, with a launch mass of 1,400 kilograms, was designed to serve the Nordic region and Northern Europe with its 15 Ku-band transponders. Although THOR 2 has been deorbited, it played an essential role in improving satellite communications during its operational lifespan. Positioned at 23° East in an inclined orbit, THOR 2 was expected to function for 12 years, offering dependable communication services to its designated areas. Reflect on the legacy of THOR 2 in the evolution of satellite technology and how it paved the way for subsequent advancements in the field.
