Every creative decision in post-processing contributes to the overall feel of an image. This video breaks down my process of color grading a single fashion image, showing how shifts in white balance, tone, and hue can turn one portrait into three completely different visual interpretations. I begin with a beautiful natural light portrait of my subject using an open garage door as a large, soft light source. To create separation and rim highlights, I positioned white V-flats slightly behind the subject (a technique that adds subtle glowing separation for my subjects with somewhat darker skin tones). After capturing and selecting the final image, it’s time for color grading! Color grading is both about color theory and intention, as well as emotional communication through color. In this video, I use Capture One to demonstrate the tools I use to color-grade a RAW image in three different ways. 1. Fashion Color Grade — Clean, Polished, and High-End A simple, balanced look that enhances natural tones while keeping the image refined and editorial. Tools used: • Adjusted white balance for a neutral, natural feel • Used the color editor to desaturate greens and balance warm skin tones • Increased contrast and clarity for detail and texture • Applied AI masking to subtly darken and desaturate the background for separation 2. Warm and Rich — Analogous, Golden Tones This look leans into warm hues for a glowing aesthetic that feels rich and luxurious. Tools used: • Pushed white balance warmer with a magenta tint for harmony • Adjusted the color balance for a warm analogous color • Added vignetting to focus attention and deepen the mood • Refined background hues toward brown using the color editor hue shift 3. Creative and Moody — Deep Purple Tones A bold, cinematic look featuring cool purple tones and dramatic contrast, creating a mysterious atmosphere. Tools used: • Shifted background hue toward purple-blue for a surreal tone (tint and white balance adjustment) • Balanced warm and cool tones using complementary color theory with the color editor Key takeaway: There’s no single “correct” color grade, only what supports your creative intention. Whether you want your image to feel warm and inviting or dark and cinematic, color grading is the tool that tells that story visually.
