Funchal, Madeira’s largest tourist, commercial, and cultural hub, is a city full of history, charm, and breathtaking natural beauty. Nestled on a large slope facing the Atlantic Ocean, the city is shaped like a natural amphitheatre, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. It was granted city status in 1508 by King Manuel I, and its rich history reflects centuries of European cosmopolitanism mixed with the island’s deep connection to nature. The city’s name comes from fennel (Foeniculum Vulgare), a fragrant wild herb that once flourished in the area. Over the centuries, regional products like sugar and wine became integral to the local economy, turning Funchal into a major trading hub in the Atlantic. These products still hold cultural and economic significance today, evident in the city’s coat of arms. On this visit to Funchal, I decided to step outside the city and explore the island with the help of dear friends who live here. From the lush mountains to the coastline, Madeira’s natural beauty is absolutely mesmerizing. Exploring beyond Funchal allowed me to see a different side of the island, offering a peaceful escape from the busy city life. Madeira truly offers something for everyone, blending rich history with stunning landscapes.
