Today Master of Wine, David Allen, tastes a look at a wine that he believes is one of the best value and most consistent quality wines produced anywhere in Bordeaux at the moment, Chateau Doisy Daene from Barsac. He tastes the 2015 vintage. Château Doisy Daene is located in the Barsac commune within Bordeaux. It is a Grand Cru Classé Second Growth under the classification of 1855, which took place in Sauternes and Barsac at the same time as the famous classification of the Médoc and Graves. Doisy-Daëne has been owned by the Dubourdieu family since 1924. Doisy-Daëne is one of five châteaux owned by the Dubourdieu family. All located in Bordeaux, the other estates are Châteaux Reynon, Cantegril, Haura and Clos Floridène. Denis Dubourdieu (1949-2016) was an acclaimed enologist and director of the Institute of Vine and Wine Sciences of the University of Bordeaux. The estate is run today by his sons Fabrice and Jean-Jaques. The estate was once part of a larger property which was divided into three individual châteaux in the mid-19th Century. Château Doisy-Védrines and Doisy-Dubroca - all are Grand Cru Classé Second Growths. In 2014 Denis Dubordieu purchased Doisy-Dubroca and the family began making wine again at this estate in 2019. The estate makes three wines from 18 hectares (45 acres) of vineyard. These are planted mostly to Semillon, with a small portion of Sauvignon Blanc. The Grand Vin is thus predominantly Semillon, and is made from botrytis-affected grapes.
