PENSACOLA, Fla. -- A Pensacola mother says her child was assaulted on school grounds. Amanda Bellamy says the fight happened Wednesday during school hours at Jim C. Bailey Middle School. She claims teachers stood by, doing nothing to stop the fight between her son and a boy two years older than him. But the district says that's protocol. However, that's not enough for this mom, who's now pulled her child out of the Escambia County Public School system. She will be re-enrolling him at a private institution. Bellamy says her 14-year old son was assaulted by his 16-year-old classmate. "He punched him multiple times," Bellamy said. "Threw him to the floor, threw him into the wall. He has multiple whelps and hematomas on the inside of his mouth." Bellamy says during the fight, staff stood there watching, waiting on the school resource officer to arrive. But by the time the student resource officer got there it was too late. "It was finished," said Bellamy. "The fight was over. And the kid ran away." Bellamy says she believes her son's injuries were preventable. "I think a teacher should intervene," Bellamy said. "But what was explained to me today was, unless it's life or death to protect the students and the teachers, the teacher doesn't intervene." "My issue is at what point is life or death?" she said. "When the head is smacking a wall, when the head is smacking a floor, if it smacks it three times, five times, like how do you define someone's life's in danger? Because truly hitting a head at an awkward angle one time could be life or death." A spokesperson for Escambia County Public Schools declined to speak on camera, but says teachers are allowed to try to verbally stop a fight. WEAR: "Did this teacher who, teacher in the hallway, did they verbally intervene at all?" Bellamy: "They did not. Like, you can just see that they're standing there like this... He could have stepped in between them and just been like, 'Hey, we're done. Stop. Go on about your business. Let's not do this anymore.' And he was big enough to where neither of them would have been able to continue and the barrage of punches that my son received would have not been able to continue." Bellamy says she's thankful the district dropped her son's five-day suspension, but still wants justice. The Escambia County Sheriff's Office is currently investigating the incident. The district says student safety is its top priority, and certain staff members are trained to respond to events like these. #pensacola #florida #news ---------------------------- READ MORE STORIES: https://weartv.com/ Stay up to date with our social media: WEAR on Facebook: / weartv WEAR on Twitter: / weartv WEAR on Instagram: / weartv WEAR on TikTok: http://tiktok.com/weartv Subscribe to WEAR on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHiv...
