Evening everyone — hope you’re all doing well. Yesterday me and Roxy headed out for a hike and a bit of car camping around Malham, one of the most iconic landscapes in the Yorkshire Dales. I parked at the Malham Visitor Centre (£6 up to midnight) and set off around 1pm. The first couple of miles are a bit of a climb, but once you’re up, it settles. The weather wasn’t great — colder the higher I got, snow on the ground, and thick fog rolling in. Roxy loving every second as usual. My first stop was Pikedaw Calamine Caverns, part of the old lead‑mining landscape above Malham. The area around Pikedaw was heavily mined in the 18th and 19th centuries for lead, calamine (zinc ore), and other minerals, and the caverns you see today are the remains of those workings — now blocked off for safety. From there I carried on through the slippy fields until I reached some steep, greasy steps. Once I got down safely, I got the drone out… and after about three minutes I managed to crash it 60–70 metres up a gorge. I tried everything from the bottom — stones, the climbers’ rope — nothing. A group of walkers came by and helped, but still no luck. I even tried climbing myself but quickly realised I was way out of my depth. I stopped while I still felt safe and came back down. So I had to go back up the steps, all the way around to the top of the gorge. After many attempts I finally dislodged it… only to hear the crash‑bang‑crash of the drone bouncing its way down. Did it fly after that fall? You’ll have to watch the video and find out. By now I’d lost about an hour and the light was fading. I headed on to Malham Cove, one of the most famous limestone features in the Dales — an 80‑metre high, 300‑metre wide curved cliff formed by a massive waterfall at the end of the last Ice Age. The limestone pavement on top is one of the best examples in the UK and even appeared in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I grabbed a few shots in the rain and tried the drone again — but you’ll have to watch the video to see if I got any epic views. After Malham Cove there’s a stile that’s basically a ladder — poor Roxy had to climb it like a mountaineer 😅 From there I carried on to Gordale Scar, a dramatic limestone gorge with cliffs over 100 metres high. It’s believed to have been formed either by glacial meltwater or a collapsed cavern system — either way, it’s one of the most impressive natural features in Yorkshire. At the gate I noticed a sign for a UFO car‑camping group — if anyone’s into that, definitely worth checking out 👍 I followed the road and path to Janet’s Foss, a beautiful waterfall set in its own little woodland amphitheatre. Local folklore says it’s named after Janet, the queen of the fairies, who was said to live in a cave behind the falls. By this point it was properly dark. I put my light on and had the company of owls — you can hear them in the video. Moments like that remind me how much I love being out in nature. The path back to the car was pitch black, but we made it. I drove to my marked car‑camping spot, got set up, and tried to cook burgers… but it was far too windy. So I settled for a cheese and cheese‑and‑onion crisp sandwich with mayo 😅 Only Fools and Horses on in the background — first episode was Yuppy Love (Del Boy falling through the bar 🤣). I watched a few episodes and tried to sleep, but it wasn’t great — my back was killing and the burning sensations kicked in. I headed home around 7am and cooked my breakfast: a fillet steak I’d got reduced at Morrisons months ago. Would’ve been better in the Dales, but it still hit the spot. I hope you enjoy the video — it’s a long one, but there was so much to take in. Thanks as always for supporting me and following along.
