The Talysh language is a Northwestern Iranian language belonging to the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European family. It is spoken primarily in northern Iran and southern Azerbaijan by the Talysh people. With its rich phonetic system and distinct dialects, Talysh is considered an endangered language due to the dominance of Persian in Iran and Azerbaijani in Azerbaijan. Efforts to preserve and promote Talysh include linguistic documentation, cultural initiatives, and education programs, particularly by the diaspora and local advocates. Tat, or Caucasian Tat, is an endangered language spoken by the Tat people primarily in parts of Azerbaijan and southern Dagestan, Russia. It belongs to the Southwestern Iranian branch of the Indo-Iranian languages, closely related to Persian but with influences from the Turkic, Caucasian, and Slavic languages due to its geographical setting. Tat has several dialects, with variations influenced by local languages and cultural contacts. The language is traditionally written in the Cyrillic or Latin scripts in different regions, though historically it used the Persian script. Tat has been impacted by language shift, with many Tat speakers adopting Azerbaijani, leading to a decline in native speakers. Preservation efforts are minimal, but there are local initiatives aimed at documenting and revitalizing the language.
