Basic Matrix Mold of Venus, Poured Blanket Mold, or Cavity Pour Mold process This tutorial covers the process of "matrix" molds or "cavity pour" molds. This is a moldmaking technique ideal for medium sized sculptures and similar parts that allows a vacuum degassed silicone to be poured in a conservative manner, saving material and allowing the mold to be easily "re-poured" when it wears out. This technique is important for production casting as the finished mold can be easily reproduced once the support shell is made and the finished mold allows for pressure casting. If you missed the intro video explaining the "why and How" of this process, here;s the link: • The How & Why Of Matrix #moldmaking This technique has several names: "poured blanket mold," "cavity pour mold," and most recently, "matrix mold." Essentially, the mold is made in reverse. What will ultimately become the silicone mold is first sculpted in clay over the original pattern. A mother mold or support shell is made over the clay. The clay is then removed creating a cavity between the pattern and the shell. Silicone is then poured into this cavity producing a mold. Before silicone thixotropic additives, this method was used to make lower cost silicone molds. For this Venus statue mold I used brush-able resin, BR-75D, to make the mother-mold over a clay form. Once the support shell or "mother mold" is made, the silicone is poured to create the actual mold. For this I use TC-5110F platinum silicone.
