In this video, Toby and I head deep into Savannah Portage State Park in Minnesota to spend a couple nights camping in the snow at a rarely used campsite surrounded by ice, solitude, and untouched wilderness. This state park is intentionally kept rustic and undeveloped — with no gas motors on the lakes, no cabins lining the shorelines, and very little winter traffic. It’s a place where people come not for luxury, but for quiet, reflection, and connection with nature. Long ago, this land served as an important travel corridor connecting the Mississippi River watershed to the Great Lakes, used for generations by Indigenous people and later voyageurs and traders. Today, the forest has reclaimed that route, returning it to stillness — and the park has chosen to protect it rather than modernize it. This trip is about slowing down, embracing winter conditions while solo camping, and experiencing the outdoors in a calm, traditional way. We settle into a snowy forest camp, build a fire, make popcorn, and spend the night warm and safe inside the camper before exploring the park the next day. #solocamping #camping #wintercamping #snow #truckcamping #rvlife #camperlife #truckcamper
