Welcome to my channel! This is episode 2 of my 1950s Hydroplane Project. I've never owned a boat with a wood hull before so this was all new to me, and I'll show you my process of restoring it and share the methods, tips, tricks, and products I used to restore it. If you have experience and see me doing something wrong, please leave a comment below! Hydroplanes are air entrapment hulls, which capture the air to lift the boat out of the water to reduce drag and increase speed. This little boat is a 3 point hydro called a MiniMax, and although the wood was in good shape, the finish was completely shot. I tried sanding it but what really worked well was a heat gun and a rounded putty knife; I'll show you how to easily strip the hull down to the bare wood. It's only 8 feet long and about 4 feet wide, but this little thing should hit 40-50mph when properly set up, and the sensation of speed being only inches from the water should make it seem like 100mph. Although it's in pretty great conditions, there are a couple things I want to do to it before I get her wet; watch the video for my plans on refinishing the hull with a trick graphite and epoxy coating to reduce drag, and rebuild the steering area to improve the aesthetics. Hopefully watching this will help convince people to tackle their own boat restorations; it's dirty work sometimes but it's not too complex or challenging, so please leave a message if you have any questions and I'll try to help. If you liked this video or learned something, please check out some of my other videos and stay tuned for updates to the SST project! Products used in this video; clicking them supports my channel but doesn't cost you a penny, cheers!
