By cutting dovetails, the wood is prevented from splitting at the point where the dovetail was cut, and the restraining force is increased, thus increasing the rigidity of the wood. Normally, the dovetail should be attached to the receiving end of the wood. A flat surface is preferable rather than a dovetail, since the member on the side to be pushed will be subjected to compressive forces on the notched surface when a load is applied to both ends. I cut dovetails on both members for design purposes.
