It was the summer of 1970, just one year after the United States began withdrawing its troops from Vietnam, signaling the war was nearing its end. Yet, for the many soldiers scattered across South Vietnam, the horrors of war were still painfully real. Men of the 101st Airborne Division were sent to a remote region of A Shau Valley given its key tactical importance to the North Vietnamese. The Americans' first objective for the broader operation chicago peak, was a remote and abandoned base which relied on a helicopter lifeline for supplies and personal, leaving only one way in or out. However, its importance was critical to disrupt enemy supply lines in the region. In response, thousands of North Vietnamese forces converged on Ripcord in what would become some of the bloodiest and most intense combat of the entire war.
