In this exclusive celebrity interview, author and former BBC journalist Gina Waggott reveals the incredible true story behind her rare and deeply personal friendship with the world’s most unlikely pop sensation, Scatman John as she chats with Jim on this episode of The Jim Masters Show celebrity talk show series. In this exclusive interview, former BBC journalist and author Gina Waggott joins us to reveal the deeply moving true story behind her new book, Scatman John: The Remarkable Story of the World’s Unlikeliest Popstar. Most of the world knows Scatman John (John Larkin) for his viral 1995 hit "Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop," but few know the man who spent 52 years hiding a severe stutter before becoming a global sensation. Gina shares her rare and personal friendship with John—a connection that began with a fan letter when she was just a teenager and evolved into a life-changing mentorship. John Paul Larkin, known professionally under the alias Scatman John, was an American musician. A prolific jazz pianist and vocalist for several decades, he rose to prominence in 1994 through his fusion of scat singing and dance music. He recorded five albums, which were released between 1986 and 2001. Outside of his musical activities, he had deepened exchanges with stuttering organizations and established the Scatland Foundation in 1996 with the purpose of furthering research of and educating the public on stuttering. Larkin was a recipient of the American Speech–Language–Hearing Association's Annie Glenn Award for outstanding service to the stuttering community and a posthumous inductee to the National Stuttering Association Hall of Fame. In this interview, we dive into: The Secret Behind the Scat: How John turned his greatest fear—his stutter—into his greatest strength. A Rare Friendship: Gina opens up about how John’s support "saved her life" during her own journey as a person who stammers. From Jazz to Europop: The improbable rise of a 52-year-old jazz pianist to the top of the pop charts. The Legacy of John Larkin: Why his message of "Scatman's World" is more relevant today than ever.
