The piece opens in an aleatoric haze, with whispering string gestures and resonant inside-piano sonorities. Gradually, fragments of “kolo” (traditional circle dance) melody and the heterophonic texture of archaic Slavic chant emerge, driven by persistent piano ostinati. This opening section evokes the “Ličko gluvo kolo” (Lika silent dance), a regional variant of the “Nemo kolo” tradition inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2011. Like its Dalmatian counterpart, the Lika silent dance is performed without instruments, relying solely on percussive footwork and vocal call-and-response. To mirror this unaccompanied, physical energy, the performers employ extended techniques—scraping strings and wood with bows, fingers, and superballs—creating the impression of a workshop before fully pitched material congeals. At the climax, the trio unites in vigorous Balkan dance rhythms, presenting the folkloric material at its most forceful. Thereafter, the momentum gradually subsides: folk gestures recede to sul ponticello whispers and fading overtones, so that the final quiet passage feels not as an end to chaos, but as its distilled echo. . . . . .
