In a forceful and passionate interview to explain why he believes India – its governments, both at the Centre and the States, it’s industrialists and also its people the aam aadmi – have repeatedly let down the Kashmiri people, Ramachandra Guha, the internationally renowned historian, author and political commentator, says “harassment and persecution of innocent Kashmiri people is happening only because they are Muslims”. He says there is no one willing to call this to account. As he puts it: “The Prime Minister is silent, the Home Minister is silent, the BJP President is silent, every BJP Cabinet member is silent.” He asks: “Have we lost our humanity totally that we behave like this?” In a 30-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Ramachandra Guha says: “In everything they have done – and not done – since August 5, 2019, the Union government has made it manifest that it wants Kashmiris to be submissive and docile subjects, not free and self-respecting citizens.” His conclusion is simple. “It is past time that we begin redeeming promises made by successive governments to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Restoring statehood, and doing so immediately, is a necessary first step.” I am only giving you some of the main key points made by Ramachandra Guha.
