What is a usage license and what are the components that go into forming one? This video breaks down what items go into crafting a usage license and how the license can be broad in scope or tighten up depending on the needs of the client as well as the budget. The list of things to include in your license: Parties involved. Who is the end user of the images and who is licensing the images? Where will the image(s) be use? This is the specific places that the photograph will be seen. How will the image be distributed? For instance SMS text, direct email campaign, a print ad in a magazine, etc. Placement refers to where will the image appear in the specific media. An example would be a homepage banner or a single placement on the front cover. What is the maximum size the image can be displayed? An example would be 8x12 or full page. How many design versions, editions, or issues can the image be reproduced? What is the maximum number of reproductions that can be made of the photograph for display or distribution? ie. 50,000 greeting cards, 10,000 marketing brochures What is the time period that the photograph can be used by the licensing client? ie. one time use for one social media platform or 1 year in North America Is the image exclusive or not exclusive to the client? Meaning if it is exclusive then the image can not be licensed to anyone else for same usage when the time period agreed upon.
