Colorectal cancer-related deaths are on the rise Dawson's Creek actor James Van Der Beek died last month at 48 after a battle with colorectal cancer. His death brought renewed attention to the disease, which also killed actor Chadwick Boseman in 2020, when he was just 43. Colorectal cancer is now the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among people under 50 in the U.S., according to the Journal of the American Medical Association. While most cases are still found in adults over 50, rates in younger adults are rising. In 2018, the American Cancer Society updated its guidelines, recommending that average-risk adults begin screening at the age of 45 rather than 50. Colorectal cancer is still highly treatable when detected early.
