Edgar Junius Hayes was born on May 23, 1902 in Lexington, Kentucky. As a pianist, he graduated from Wilberforce University with a degree in music around 1921. In 1922, he began his professional music career, goingn on tour with Fess Williams and would form his own group, the "Blue Grass Buddies" two years later in Ohio. In 1925, he was playing with Lois Deppe and would soon leave to lead bands called the "Eight Black Pirates" and the 'Symphonic Harmonists". From 1931 to 1936, Hayes arranged for and played in the Mills Blue Rhythm Band. 1937 saw Hayes form his own orchestra and thus bring about his first recordings on the Decca label. This band would create a couple dozen sides in their short 4 years stint and most notably, recorded the first version of "In The Mood" which would later be covered by Glenn Miller. Sadly, just as his popularity was rising, World War II and the recording bans intervened and hampered his ability to continue to flourish. Hayes would move to California in 1942 and led a quartet called the "Stardusters" there for the rest of the decade. After the group disbanded, he continued on solo, performing live well into the 1970's. He would pass away in 1979. Today's song, "Laughing At Life", originally written by Bob Todd, Cornell Todd, Charles Kenny and Nick Kenny. The song was first recorded by Jack Albin and his Hotel Pennsylvania Music back in 1930 with names like Ruth Etting, Ted Lewis and Chick Bullock having a go at it over the years. Hayes' recording took place in New York City on July 27, 1937 with vocals provided by Bernard Flood and ensemble featuring Roger Boyd, Rudy Powell (clarinet, alto saxophone), Joe Garland, Crawford Wethington (tenor saxophone), Kenny Clarke (drums), Leonard Davis Bernard Flood, Henry Goodwin (trumpet), Edgar Hayes (piano), Robert Horton, David James (trombone), Andy Jackson (guitar), and Elmer James (string bass).
