DIY Outside wood burning forced air furnace FREE HEAT in the winter It looks like one of my money saving schemes has actually worked according to plan! It does go through lots of wood, but wood is easy to get. Our propane bill in 2017 was $1700 CAD for the year. That's with us using the furnace sparingly. We were always cold inside the house. At night we would turn off the furnace off and the house would be at 9 C (48 F) when we woke up in the morning. With this setup I think we can save $1500 - $2000 CAD a year. We still use propane for the hot water heater plus using the furnace for really cold days and overnight burns. This project will pay for itself within one year! I will be buying CO detectors for inside the house and a fire extinguisher for outside.
